Visitors exploring central Seoul during peak travel season

South Korea reached 15.05 million foreign visitors through the end of August 2026, according to figures released today by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), placing the country ahead of its record annual pace for the first time since international travel fully resumed.

The cumulative total represents a 22% increase over the same period in 2024, the previous benchmark year, and puts South Korea on track to exceed 20 million foreign arrivals for the full year — a figure that would surpass the country’s all-time annual record set in 2019.

Who’s Visiting

Chinese visitors account for the largest share of the growth, with arrivals from mainland China up sharply following the expansion of direct air routes agreed earlier in 2026. Japanese, American, and Southeast Asian travellers also contributed to the record pace, with summer K-pop events, festivals, and the country’s growing reputation for food tourism all cited as key drivers.

Seoul handled the bulk of arrivals, but KTO data shows increasing dispersal to secondary destinations including Busan, Gyeongju, and Jeju Island, a shift the government has actively encouraged through regional tourism incentive programmes.

What This Means for Visitors

The record arrivals reflect genuine demand, but travellers should plan accordingly. Popular Seoul districts including Insadong, Hongdae, and the area around Gyeongbokgung Palace are significantly busier than in previous years, particularly at weekends. Advance booking for guesthouses, Korean barbecue restaurants, and popular cultural experiences is recommended, especially during the Chuseok period and the upcoming autumn season.

Autumn is one of the best times to visit South Korea, with foliage peaking across the country from mid-October through November. The season draws visitors to national parks including Seoraksan and Naejangsan, as well as to the historic streets of Jeonju and Gyeongju.

KTO has indicated it expects the pace to continue through autumn, with October and November typically among the strongest months for inbound tourism to the country.
