Seoul Monsoon Flooding July 2026: Travel Safety Information
Heavy rainfall on July 18, 2026, caused flash flooding in several parts of Seoul during the peak of the summer monsoon (jangma) season. Affected areas included parts of Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu, and low-lying residential streets near the Cheonggyecheon stream. Seoul Metro suspended services temporarily on sections of Lines 2 and 7 due to water ingress, with services restored within several hours.
No serious injuries were officially reported from the July 18 event, but the disruption serves as a reminder that July and early August bring the heaviest rainfall of the year to South Korea, and travel plans should account for this.
What the Monsoon Season Means for Visitors
Seoul’s jangma season typically runs from late June through late July, followed by hot and humid post-monsoon conditions in August. Rainfall during this period often comes in intense, short bursts rather than all-day drizzle - but when it does, drainage in some older neighbourhoods is overwhelmed quickly.
The underground shopping arcades and subway concourses that run under major Seoul intersections are generally safe during heavy rain and can serve as temporary shelter. Avoid underpasses, tunnels, and basement-level restaurants or shops in known flood-prone areas during active downpours.
Areas and Transport to Watch
The Gangnam area - particularly streets near Gangnam Station (Lines 2 and 9) - has flooded in previous monsoon events due to the topography of the Han River basin. The Sinchon and Mapo areas have also seen localised flooding in heavy rain years.
Seoul Metro operates a real-time status board at each station and via the official app. If flooding disrupts your line, bus alternatives (the T-money card works on buses) or taxis (available through Kakao T) are usually the fastest alternatives. Bike-sharing (Seoul Bike / Ttareungyi) is not advisable during active rain events.
The Cheonggyecheon stream walkway that runs through central Seoul is closed to pedestrians when water levels rise - signage is posted at entry points.
Planning Around the Season
If you are travelling to Seoul during July and August, carry a compact umbrella or lightweight rain jacket at all times. Shoes that can handle wet ground are advisable - the pavements around traditional markets such as Gwangjang and Namdaemun can be very slippery in heavy rain.
