Gwangju Kimchi Cultural Festival 2026

The Gwangju World Kimchi Cultural Festival takes place each October at Kim Daejung Convention Center in Gwangju, the capital of South Jeolla Province. It coincides with kimjang season - the period in late autumn when Korean households traditionally prepare large batches of kimchi for winter storage. The event has been running since 1994 and is considered the most prominent kimchi-focused cultural event in South Korea.

What the festival covers

The festival is primarily experiential. Visitors can take part in communal kimchi-making sessions led by experienced chefs and cultural educators, working with the cabbages, radishes, gochugaru (chili flakes), fermented shrimp and garlic that form the base of most kimchi recipes. Regional variety is a significant part of the programming: South Jeolla Province is known for producing some of the most flavour-forward kimchi in Korea, and tasting sessions feature regional styles that differ considerably from the standard baechu-kimchi (napa cabbage kimchi) most people recognise.

Exhibition areas cover the history of kimchi, its health associations, and the science of lacto-fermentation. There are also cooking demonstrations, competitions for both professional and amateur participants, and a vendor area where producers from across Korea display and sell their products. Cultural performances, food stalls and craft markets run alongside the main programme.

Tickets and access

Entry to the main festival grounds has historically been free or low-cost (typically under 5,000 KRW). Specific hands-on workshops such as the communal kimchi-making sessions may have a separate participation fee and require pre-registration, which fills quickly. Check the official programme once it is published, usually six to eight weeks before the event.

Getting to Gwangju

From Seoul, KTX trains reach Gwangju Songjeong Station in approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. City buses and taxis connect the station to Kim Daejung Convention Center. Gwangju is also reachable from Busan by intercity bus in around 2 hours 30 minutes.
